Introduction to Homeschool

what is education?

Christian education must equip young individuals to navigate and confront challenges to their worldview, particularly as they encounter secular influences beyond the shelter of their Christian upbringing. This includes preparing them to engage critically with the notion that religious beliefs should be set aside in academic settings, as influenced by prevailing cultural attitudes pervasive in academia and media. Understanding the origins and implications of these cultural biases is essential for individuals to maintain their faith amidst societal pressures.

DEFINING TRUE EDUCATION

"Our ideas of education take too narrow and too low a range. There is need for a broader scope, a higher aim. True education means more than the perusal of a certain course of study. It means more than a preparation for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole being, and with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers. It prepares the student for the joy of service in this world and for the higher joy of wider service in the world to come."

~Ellen G. White, Education

THE REALITY

"For we have let our young men and women go out unarmed in a day when armor was never so necessary. By teaching them to read, we have left them at the mercy of the printed word. By the invention of the film and radio, we have made certain that no aversion to reading shall secure them from the incessant battery of words, words, words. They do not know how to ward them off or blunt their edge or fling them back; they are prey to words in their emotions instead of being the masters of them in their intellects...We have lost the tools of learning, and in their absence can only make a botched and piecemeal job of it."

~Dororthy L. Sayers, "The Lost Tools of Learning"

THE GOAL OF EDUCATION

"Every human being, created in the image of God is endowed with a power akin to that of the Creator--individuality, power to think and to do. The men in whom this power is developed are men who bear responsibilities, who are leaders in enterprise, and who influence character. It is the work of true education to develop this power, to train the youth to be thinkers, and not mere reflectors of other men's thought. Instead of confining their study to that which men have said or written, let students be directed to the sources of truth, to the vast fields opened for research in nature and revelation. Let them contemplate the great facts of duty and destiny, and the mind will expand and strengthen.

"Instead of educated weaklings, institutions of learning may send forth men strong to think and to act, men who are masters and not slaves of circumstances, men who possess breadth of mind, clearness of thoughts, and the courage of their convictions."

~Ellen G. White, Education

THE METHOD

"In a knowledge of God all true knowledge and real development have their source...The mind of man is brought into communion with the mind of God, the finite with the Infinite. The effect of such communion on body and mind and soul is beyond estimate.

In this communion is found the highest education. It is God's own method of development. 'Acquaint now thyself with Him' (Job 22:21), is His message to mankind."

~Ellen G. White, Education

Testimonials about Homeschooling

"Successfully navigating homeschooling requires patience, understanding, and thorough research. Whether you're a novice embarking on the educational journey or an experienced, practitioner, it's important to recognize that homeschooling is accessible to everyone, regardless of professional training or teaching experience. Discovering a curriculum aligned with your child's learning style is the key to unlocking a smooth and fulfilling homeschooling experience." Tamsin Thomas - Homeschooling for 13 years TESTIMONIAL When my wife and I decided to homeschool our son Levi, I was excited for the opportunity to play such an integral role in his education, but also nervous as I am not formally trained as a teacher. We were encouraged by other homeschool families at our church not to let that prevent us from trying, and I’m so glad we decided to move forward with it. I love being able spend this time with Levi, witnessing his joy as he learns and progresses, and guiding him through struggles and challenges when they arise. It has probably been equally as joyful and challenging for me as it has for him, as there are so many options to choose from and so many unknowns when starting a homeschool journey. I believe that having friends and other resources available that you can trust, and are in line with your family’s faith, provides the type of support needed for a successful homeschool experience. Phillip Burks - Homeschooling for under 2 years TESTIMONIAL You know, diving into homeschooling with Nolan in 4th grade is like taking a trip down memory lane to my own positive experience as a homeschooled kid. The flexibility of this focused approach embraces the appropriate breaks needed for a more balanced approach for my son. I've been weaving in lessons learned from my homeschooling experience making education a personal and empowering adventure for Nolan. With grandma's wealth of experience shaping our approach, it's been remarkable, boosting Nolan's confidence and sparking substantial improvements in his math and reading skills. Trust me, it's a journey worth taking. Elizabeth Perez - 1st Year Homeschooling TESTIMONIAL "Navigating the unfamiliar territory of homeschooling was initially daunting, especially without professional teaching experience. However, by delving into research and seeking guidance from fellow homeschooling parents, I overcame my uncertainties. When we decided to homeschool Noah, he couldn't read, but within a few short months, thanks to our efforts, he not only learned to read but also showed significant improvement in math. It's a testament to the power of determination and the supportive homeschooling community." Bernie Champagne - Just Started Homeschooling TESTIMONIAL
